In the last two weeks Americans have mourned the loss of George Floyd along with Breonna Taylor and countless other innocent black people that have died at the hands of police brutality.
Difficult conversations have led to many Americans truly understanding the years of systemic racism that still exist in our country today.
At this time, it’s important now more than ever to donate, speak out, and use your platform to create change in this country.
It was without hesitation that I decided to write this for the community of Detroit and hopefully be an ally for my neighbors because Black Lives Matter.
One small but actionable way to show your solidarity for the black community is to support black owned restaurants.
If you or someone you know has a restaurant that should be added to this list please email me at thesierraguide@gmail.com so I can have it added.
Consider donating your time or money to these local nonprofits.
Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, works to build self-reliance, food security and justice in Detroit’s Black community by influencing public policy, engaging in urban agriculture, promoting healthy eating, encouraging cooperative buying and directing youth towards careers in food-related fields. Detroit Food Academy, works to inspire young Detroiters (ages 10-24) through culinary arts and food entrepreneurship into becoming leaders in their own communities and beyond. (detroitfoodacademy.org)
