Falafel is a popular middle eastern dish that consists of chickpeas and spices. You’ll find it in wrapped in a pita with traditional middle eastern toppings. I love middle eastern food and I am lucky to live in Detroit where I have many options for the delicious cuisine.
I finally gained the confidence to recreate my favorite dish. I normally “leave it to the experts” but in this case I thought I’d try it out. Surprisingly it was easier than I thought. Although, I used drained can of chickpeas not fresh chickpeas that you drain overnight and let soak. If you can get fresh chickpeas, I would do that and not add the flour. If you only have canned chickpeas than make sure to add flour or the falafel will fall apart.
Add all ingredients to food processor execpt flour.
Once mixture is blended, pour into bowl and add flour
Put in fridge for 1 hour
Take out and form into balls or patties.
For Baking: Bake Falafel in oven for 15 minutes
For Frying: In a large skillet pour in oil a couple inches. When oil is heated add the falafel balls to the skillet by lowering them gently into the oil. Cook them for 2 minutes on each side
Once they are cooled down, sprinkle salt over them and serve
